Author's Questions

You enter the characters home. Answer these questions according to what you see, or write it out like a story, with these things in mind. Do this section either now or later, or in pieces, whatever seems easiest.

Describe the front of the house, the lawn, the color, any details you may see. What kind of neighbor hood is it? What kind of vibe do you get?

Walk up to the front door, describe it. What does it look like? What's on the front porch, if there is any?

Check the mail, what do you find there?

Open the door. What's the first thing you see? What strikes you most about the furniture and the décor? What do you smell? Does an animal greet you when you walk in? What shoes are in the closet/by the door? What looks like it's worn most? Walk through the house. Take in any details. Is it old fashioned? Newer? Is it clean?

In the living area, once you get there, take stock of things. What do you notice? Be the nosy writer. Flip through their books. Look under their couch and the pillows. Look at the movies, the DVDs, the CDs. Turn on the radio, take note of which station it was on or which CD was in the player. Turn on the TV, what's on the DVR? What sort of magazines are on the coffee table? Is there a computer anywhere? What model is it? Does it look like it's used often? Turn it on and take note of the background. Check the history. What was the last thing they were doing? Do they have a land-line phone? Is there a pad for messages, and if so, is there anything written on it? Are there dirty dishes? Stains? What else do you see? A photo album or a notebook? A cell phone? A stray purse? Go through all these things, take note of what you find there.

In the kitchen, once you get there, take stock of things. What does it smell like? Are the cabinets well stocked? Are there things on the counter? An abundance of pots and pans, or just the bare necessities? Are there dishes in the sink? Stains or scuffs on the counter tops? Open the refrigerator. What do you see in it? Is there a calendar anywhere? What does it say?

Go into the bathroom and look around. What does it smell like? Open up the cabinet. What do you see there? Is there any medication? What kind of things do you find in the shower? What's on the floor?

Glance in the laundry room. Is it clean and well kept, or is it messy and disheveled? Is the laundry folded? Don't bother taking note of the clothing, you're going to check their closet.

After you're done surveying the rest of the house and the other rooms there might be (library, office, guest room, parents' room, second bathroom, linen closet, etc.) go to the final place you want to snoop: their room. What do you notice when you first see it? What does it smell like? What kind of sheets are on the bed? Is it clean? What's the predominate object here – books, movies, papers, pieces of cloth?

Check the jewelry box, if there is any. You can tell a lot about a woman from her jewelry. What kind of things do you find there?

What's on the bedside table? A favorite book? An alarm clock? A favorite object? A pad and pen? What do you find there? Check the drawer. What nicknacks do you find there?

Open up their sock drawer. What color socks are there? Some people hide keepsakes there. Is there anything odd you find there, or out of place that might have meaning to them?

Open up the rest of the drawers, search through the closet, the armoire. What kind of clothing does your character wear? What looks like it's worn the most? Is there anything with tags or completely unused or out of place? Why do you think they even own it then? What kind of style do you notice? How is it organized?

Take one final look around. Imagine that your character has a journal. What does it look like? How is it used? What do the pages look like What kind of writing does your character use? Is it sloppy or painstakingly neat? What sorts of things are written there? What does it say about them?

DAMN!!

This sheet would be a beast to fill out, but you're right; every detail is covered. Just filling this out for one of my characters would take days (need to sort out the details) but I would never need to write anything related to anything in this sheet again.
The order that you fill the stuff out in is also something to behold. As you go farther down the outline, the notes and questions get deeper. It's very straight forward like this as the top is top layer of the character (the stuff you know off hand) and the bottom is the stuff you need to work on to get right.

The only downside IS the length. Doing this for every character would be silly and take far to long. I would make a note that this sheet should only be used on the main character(s) or very important side characters. These are the roles that would be best suited for this type of character sheet as the author would get the most out of it if done for these characters.

Now, I could also say that the length of the story would matter. However, if you're a RP-er are write many smaller stories for one character (hi!) then filling out this sheet would also be good.
